1st Bangor kept the pressure on the league's leaders with a hard fought 2-1 at home win against a new look Civil Service side.
The first half was an even affair with both sides enjoying the perfect playing conditions on a sunny day at the Drome. However, with all the attractive football, clear cut chances were at a premium, 1st Bangor going closest in the opening exchanges from well worked corners from Aaron Caldwell and Ben Gourlay. 1st Bangor's rhythm was then unfortunately interrupted with Davey "Chocolate" Morrow limping off after just 15 minutes with what is hoped is just a strain, and being replaced with the pacey poser George Chelariu, 1st Bangor's top goalscorer this season.
As 1st Bangor adjusted to their new shape Civil Service took full advantage, their striker dispossessing Jamie Mackenzie in the box and firing low and hard past Craig Bell to make it 1-0 to Civil Service. 1st Bangor responded well, spraying the ball wide to the in-form duo of Ryan Oliver and Aaron Caldwell who were a constant threat throughout the game.
As the pressure mounted on the Civil Service defence, the goal eventually came just before half time. A well delivered corner from Caldwell, nodded on by Chris Scott and forced home by Oliver at the back post to make it 1-1 going into the break.
The second half proved to be more of the same, with the final ball from both sides just lacking the preciseness required to open up the opposing defence. But as the sun beat down space eventually started opening up with 1st Bangor full backs Jamie Mackenzie and Matthew Pollard (later replaced by Michael Paul) pushing on as Jeff McNamara, Ben Gourlay and new signing Gareth Daly controlled the game from midfield.
The winner came from an unlikely source, 1st Bangor's Club Captain producing a step-over and a turn of pace belying his usual centre-back position and then finding Ryan Oliver at the back post to somehow find a finish from an impossible angle and make it 2-1 1st Bangor.
In the dying seconds, Civil Service couldn’t have come closer to equalising as their diminutive striker found himself with the ball at this feet 3 yards out with the whole goal at his mercy only to see his strike unbelievably denied with a spectacular save from 1st Bangor's impressive young keeper Craig Bell.
The whistle sounded seconds later giving 1st Bangor the win and keeping the pace-setters in the league watching over their shoulders.
