1st Bangor returned to league action in sparkling fashion, running out comfortable 5-2 winners against Donard.
After a quiet start, 1st Bangor racheted up the pressure with McCormick and Oliver combining well time and again to open up the Donard defence. With Beattie and Scott both hitting the bar the opening goal was inevitable. It eventually came after Oliver picked out Scott in the box who turned and fired home into the corner to give 1st Bangor the lead.
With the Donard keeper pulling off some fantastic saves from Caldwell, McCormick and Scott, 1st Bangor must've been wondering whether the second goal would come but it did as the end of the first half approached. McCormick delivering a great ball into Scott whose header was well saved only for Oliver to follow up and slam into the net to make it 2-0.
Then came the strike of the match as, against the run of play, Donard's number 8 picked up the ball fully 30 yards out and smashed a superb strike which left O'Neill in the Bangor goal rooted to the spot and just able to watch it fly into the net.
If there were any nerves with the tight score at half-time these were soon dispelled as 1st Bangor scored within seconds of the restart - Beattie delivering a fine ball to send Gourley racing clear who then found an excellent finish from a tight angle to make it 3-1.
The 4th then came thanks to some excellent wing play from Nicholl who fired in a great cross which flicked off both defender and Scott to make it 4-1. Referee confirmed Scott was credited with the goal.
As Donard struggled to cope with Bangor's possession and passing, they did eventually get some further reward with their efforts, Donard's number 8 putting a great header from a corner past O'Neill to give Donard some faint hope of a comeback.
However, when Oliver found Scott in the box to slot home into the corner and complete his hat-trick, Donard's hopes were dashed, and with another great performance from the back four of Sproule, Corkum, Hill and Nicholl, in front of the impressive O'Neill, there was to be no way back for Donard from 5-2.
Further goals nearly came via the impressive Beattie and tireless Oliver, both going close in the latter stages but as the final whistle went, 1st Bangor would be pleased with the performance and the scoreline, 5-2 winners on the day.
Saturday also saw Ross Wilson making his league debut for the 1sts after some impressive performances for the 2nds, Jeff McNamara make his comeback from injury and new signing Keith Docherty make his debut for the club. All of which was great to see as the Club continue to put together a strong squad as they work hard towards achieving promotion.
